Summer Support from the Board and beyond

Summer is a very magical time for kids filled with summer camps, holiday celebrations and exciting adventures!  Our board works to ensure that this is the case for the children living in the San Francisco shelter system just as it is for their own kids!  In addition to thousands of dollars in grants allocated to our shelter partners for summer programming, our board members were hands on at Raphael House to ensure that a wonderful holiday party came together for Independence Day.   Board members gathered to paint posters, stuff goody bags, cut decorations and assemble games to assist the...

Recreation Classes Offer Enrichment Opportunities

In early 2012, Children of Shelters (COS) launched a program to provide our shelter partners with access to recreational activities through San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department (SFRPD).  Through our program, children are participating in classes ranging from ballet to futsal to skateboarding to claymation.   We have enrolled our shelter partner children in classes for toddlers to teens, and all classes are held at community recreation centers no further than five blocks from the shelters and housing locations.  COS thoughtfully partners with best-in-class resources to avoid...

Garden To Table

Lindsey Whited is the Garden Educator who works with the children at St. Joseph’s Family Center as part of the Garden to Table program launched at the shelter in 2010. This COS program is a holistic approach to teach children the value of fresh food and nutrition, provide an enrichment activity and ultimately produce food to utilize in the cooking classes being offered at the shelter as part of our support programming. This fundraising season was one of the best ever for Children of Shelters, and we have you to thank. The first 10 days of December marked our 10th Annual Holiday Dinner for over 300 children and family members living in shelter, our two biggest fundraisers, and a fantastic opportunity to partner with Wells Fargo and KFOG in this year’s Concert for Kids.
