Summer is a very magical time for kids filled with summer camps, holiday celebrations and exciting adventures! Our board works to ensure that this is the case for the children living in the San Francisco shelter system just as it is for their own kids! In addition to thousands of dollars in grants allocated to our shelter partners for summer programming, our board members were hands on at Raphael House to ensure that a wonderful holiday party came together for Independence Day. Board members gathered to paint posters, stuff goody bags, cut decorations and assemble games to assist the Children’s Programming staff.
Summer time saw no lag in generous donations from the community either. We were so lucky to have received a donation from Cassi Goorin for the kids at Compass Family Center. Cassi, along with other 3rd grade students, was able to collect almost 100 pairs of shoes to donate. In a blurb posted in her school newsletter Cassi was asked what motivated her to take on such a project, Cassi said, “We have so much and are so lucky to be able to have what we have. We can’t forget how much other people don’t have.”
A wonderful surprise came this summer when Genentech, one of the world’s leading biotech companies and a major Bay Area employer, reached out to partner with Children of Shelters. At their annual conference, Genentech had hundreds of employees gathered to dress and accessorize 250 Build-A-Bears and pack art supply kits for our shelter children. The donations were generously provided to Hamilton Family Center and Compass Family Services!
